On Monday, October 14th, 2019, the initial plan for the Energy Transition of the Municipality of Megalopolis was presented and delivered by the President, Mr. Dimitris Kafantaris, and the General Manager, Mr. Ioannis Georgizas, to the Regional Governor, Mr. Panagiotis Nikas. The plan, which was implemented by SUSTAINABLE CITY in collaboration with the National Technical University of Athens and the Regional Development Institute, forms the basis for the public consultation that will be held in the local community.

The consultation will result in the finalisation of the actions that will be proposed and funded in order to mitigate the impact of the transition to the post-lignite era in Megalopolis. This project was implemented within the framework of the Memorandum of Cooperation between SUSTAINABLE CITY and the Municipality of Megalopolis. It is worth noting that the Memorandum of Cooperation was unanimously approved by the City Council of Megalopolis in 2018.

The initial plan brings together proposals as well as practices from corresponding regions of Europe, which are affected by the closure of lignite or coal power plants. These ideas are analysed and adapted for the Municipality of Megalopolis, so that this work will guide the final selection and the possible enrichment of actions that will follow the consultation.

The Peloponnese Region and the Regional Governor, Mr Nikas, personally embrace the project and take the lead. In the coming days, SUSTAINABLE CITY executives will travel to Brussels to agree on the specifics of support for the final design by the European Commission and, particularly by the European Commission's Special Secretariat for Energy Transition. The Municipality of Megalopolis has already been registered by SUSTAINABLE CITY on the corresponding platform of the Special Secretariat.
