SUSTAINABLE CITY' S FOUNDING CONFERENCE
On Wednesday, 1st of November, the Founding Conference of the Cities Network "SUSTAINABLE CITY" was successfully held at the Town Hall of Vari - Voula - Vouliagmeni. The hosting Mayor Mr. Grigoris Kontantellos declared the opening of the Conference and gave an important speech.
During the Conference, a presentation was made about the Network’s actions, projects and innovative applications, and the solutions provided by it. Moreover, the First General Assembly, which was open to the public, was held.
The President of the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE), Mr. George Patoulis, the President of the Management Organisation Unit (MOD), Mr. Panagiotis Pantos, who also conveyed the greetings of the Deputy Minister of Development Mr. Alexis Haritsis, the President of Hellenic Agency for Local Development and Local Government S.A. (EETAA), Mr. Dimitris Kalogeropoulos, and many invited Mayors attended the conference and welcomed the audience.
In his introductory speech, the President of the Network, Mr. Dimitris Kafantaris, focused on the need to utilise the available European funds as well as on the know-how that SUSTAINABLE CITY can provide to small Municipalities, while the General Manager of the Network, Mr. Ioannis Georgizas informed the audience about the initial actions.
The President of KEDE, Mr. George Patoulis, expressed his positive opinion and strong support for the initiative.
The host Mayor Mr. Grigoris Konstantellos, who embraced the initiative from the first moment, attended all the presentations and analysis of the actions and made important comments during the conference as well as during his speech, since he also holds a PhD in the field of Sustainable Development.
Among the speakers were also Professor Maria Loizidou and Professor Charis Doukas from National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), the Honorary Director in the European Commission (EC), Mr. George Kremlis, many distinguished scientists and experts who closely cooperate with "Sustainable City". During the Conference, important announcements were made regarding programmes and proposals in which the Network has participated and are going to be applied.
Many people attended the Conference while during the closing session a fruitful discussion between the mayors took place regarding the problems that Municipalities face and the solutions and support that the Network can provide them with in terms of technical assistance.
