SUSTAINABLE CITY participates in the Project "LIVING STREETS - Pilot conversion of streets to community gathering places", which is funded by the GREEN FUND under the "NATURAL ENVIRONMENT & INNOVATIVE ACTIONS 2023" funding programme (Priority Axis 4 "Innovative actions with citizens").

The project is inspired by the equivalent "LIVING STREETS" project which was implemented by SUSTAINABLE CITY in 2021 and funded by the European Climate Initiative.

"LIVING STREETS" lies within the framework of Sustainable Development and Urban Regeneration concept. The project aims to the pilot transformation of busy city streets into sustainable social hubs where citizens can gather and exchange ideas, social activities can take place and alternative forms of eco-friendly transportation (e.g. by bicycle) can be promoted. This transformation will be achieved through the temporary partial or total ban on vehicles’ usage and can lead to a city that is more sustainable and a better place to live and work in, where citizens are more involved in the decision-making process.

The project also aims to reinforce the active engagement of citizens (bottom-up approach) in spatial and zone planning that will lead to the adoption of policies focused on the citizens (people – centric approach) instead of cars.

Living Streets is also aligned with the objectives of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs), which have already been carried out for many Greek Municipalities and suggest similar actions. At the same time, social ties are expected to strengthen, and the environmental protection will be promoted.

The project supports the implementation of the Living Streets concept in the Municipalities of Aigialia, Kavala and Karpenisi.
