6th Greek National Meeting of the PATH2LC project

SUSTAINABLE CITY hosted on Wednesday 26 April 2023 the 6th National Meeting of the European project PATH2LC.

The meeting was held online, with the presence of members of SUSTAINABLE CITY and representatives from the Municipalities participating in the project (Vari - Voula – Vouliagmeni, Dodoni, Ierapetra, Corinth, Messini, Xylokastro - Eurostini, Oichalia and Pella), and the Associate Professor of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Dr. Haris Doukas.

Following the successful meetings held since the beginning of 2021, the meeting focused on a variety of topics and attracted highly targeted contributions from the participants.

The meeting was opened by Mr. Ioannis Georgizas, General Manager of SUSTAINABLE CITY, presenting the main topics and the guest speakers.

The first part of the meeting focused on the energy crisis that Europe and by extension Greece has been experiencing for the last year. Dr. Haris Doukas analysed the critical parameters of energy management, energy democracy, the dependence on fossil fuels, the current situation regarding Renewable Energy Sources, as well as the impact on citizens and society as a whole. Next, the Municipal Emission Reduction Plans (MEPs), their main points and the time frame for their implementation were analysed. Then the main elements of the DATABUILD automatic carbon footprint calculation application were presented, where the building categories, the necessary data and the user categories were explained. Finally, the navigation mode by user category was presented.

The second part of the meeting focused on topics related to the PATH2LC project. At the beginning, Mrs. Panagiota (Penny) Kazaki, member of the project team from SUSTAINABLE CITY, presented the Greek case study, which concerns the development of an overview of opportunities for energy reduction measures for different building envelope components and assess the potential for energy reduction in the region for different building stock in the Municipality of Corinth. The presentation focused on the selection of buildings, data collection, methodology implementation, identification of a funding programme or technical assistance for building renovation, and the results of the study. Afterwards, Mr. Ioannis Georgizas referred to the main features of the European Local Energy Assistance Facility, ELENA, and possible partnerships of municipalities with the aim of obtaining funding from this programme.

In the third and last part of the meeting, the representatives of the Municipalities had the opportunity to update the other participants on the progress of their projects and Dr. Panayiotis Michael from SUSTAINABLE CITY, made an overall presentation of the progress of the energy transition of the Municipalities in combination with the evaluation of the PATH2LC methodology.

This meeting was the 6th and last of the project, which is expected to be completed in August 2023.
